2) Why does Scott address it “to the public”? Try to define who he means by “the public”.

Because he wanted people to know story about what happened and illustrate why they ended up dying. When Scott writes “the public” he means every people. He want to inform and illustrate how badly it actually can end. (“Every detail of our food supplies, clothing and depots made on the interior ice-sheet and over that long stretch of 700 miles to the Pole and back, worked out to perfection. The advance party would have returned to the glacier in fine form and with surplus of food, but for the astonish-
ing failure of the man whom we had least expected to fail. Edgar Evans was thought the strongest man of the party.”)

1) Compare the style of the diary to the style of the letter to the public. In what ways to they differ?

In the text “Message to the public” have Scott use a more objective style in his writing, compared to “The last Entries” were he had use more private details, thought (”We must go on, but now the making of every camp must be more difficult and dangerous.”) and a more subjective writing style. In the “The last Entries” have Scott write which day it is and what happened. (“Wednesday, March l4”). In the text “Message to the public”, have Scott use a more informing writing, so the “public” can relate to the circumstances.  (“The weather throughout the outward journey, and especially the long gale in 83° S., stopped us.”)

What does the text tell us about the moral ideas of explorers - of Scott’s and his men’s attitude to death, fame, honour, their country?

Scott and his team, are first of all, on a mission because they want to honor their country by getting to the South Pole as the first team ever. When they found out that they were beaten they got very disappointed, because they knew the people in Britain had certain expectations to them. When the weather conditions got worse they knew that they had reached the end. But even though they knew that they probably wouldn't reach the ship they kept trying instead of giving up. They died as heroes and that is what mattered. When they died they probably didn't think of how famous the journal would be and how many people would be fascinated about their fight against the weather.

What is Scott’s main concern at the very end?

The most important thing for Scott in the end, was for him and his men to die a natural death in their struggle to make it home. He wanted to be known as a brave and honorable man, who did all the right things on the mission but where unable to survive because of the terrible weather. Both Scott and his team (also the ones who died before the journal ended) wanted to show Britain that they were fighters - and that they didn't quit, even though their legs and arms were frostbitten and they were running out of fuel.

Describe Oates’ death on March 16.-17. What were his last thoughts? How did he announce what he intended to do? Why did the others not stop him or go after him?

Titus Oates Died march 16. or saturday 17. Becurse of frostbites, that he got march 11. He colud not use him hand and food proberly. The other men knew he was close to death, but he bravely kept fighting.  His last thought was of his mother and how his regime should see the way he saw death in the eyes. Everyday he had struggeled without complaines. He woke up during a blizzard and said he wanted to go out for a walk. That was the last time Scott and the other men saw him. The other men did not stop him becourse they knew he wanted to die bravely. He did not want to complain, so he put his own misery out by walking into the blizzard.

Describe the men’s situation in terms of:

a.      their physical surroundings
Scoot and his men is surrounded by minus degrees. With snow, ice and blizzards laying everywhere. Everyday the wind was changing, and it seemed like the wether only knew how to get worse.
b.     the state of their provisions
The men had food for a couples of days (not much), teodolit, a camera, medicine, sleeping bags, tent, geological specimens, sledge, and spirit.
c.      their physical condition
Frostbites has killed one of the men and the cold is not very pleasant at all, to stay in. Scoot and his men did not have enough food, so they had to go on with a half full stomach.
d.     their mental condition
Even though the trip was tough these men did not want to give up. They had mentally an ideal thought of how they should keep on fighting, for their honor. To them giving up even when you can go on is worse than dyeing. Oaten took his own life by walked into the blizzard with his head up high.

Make a list of the men who accompany Scott on his expedition and keep track of their fates.

Wilson
March 14, horribly cold.
March 19, least frostbites in his feet.
Dies after the journal ends.
Bowers
March 14, cold but still able to set up camp.
March 18, "good" condition compared to the rest of the team.
Dies after the journal ends.
Titus Oates
March 12, not pulling much. Hands and feet were pretty useless.
March 14, serious frostbites.
March 16 or 17, said to the team that they should leave him, he dies at night.
Edgar Evans
He is out of food, and lay insensible. He dies a natural death.
Providence
Dies after the journal ends.

Who is he writing for? Analyse the text according to the communication model (sender/text/channel/receiver).

Scott was an explorer from Great Britain and the people back in his country may have been interested in what happened to Scott and his team, and if they had beaten the americans. So they will probably read what Scott wrote about their journey - and especially what happened to them since they never got home. And that make the british people the receivers and Scott the sender. When Scott died he didn't know who would find his journal, or if anybody even would. Therefor he didn't know what channel he sent it to, but it was probably a new team who were send out to look after Scott and his team. The text is a journal, and probably written with the purpose to inform people back in Great Britain about how they fought to the end, and died with honor.

What characterizes Scott’s writing style?

He is writing a diary/ journal about the trip. He uses alot of directionary words, so the reader can keep up where they are. He also takes time to write about the wheather and the troubleling curcumstances they are in according to food, health and moodswings.

What genre is the text?

Scott is writing about his attempt, with his team, to get back home from the South Pole. - And therefore it's a non-fiction. Every passage begins with a date, and that makes it some kind of journal or log book.
